FORNICATION
    Le Dictionnaire de Trévoux dit que c'est un terme de théologie. Il vient du mot latin fornix, petites chambres voûtées dans lesquelles se tenaient les femmes publiques à Rome. On a employé ce terme pour signifier le commerce des personnes libres. Il n'est point d'usage dans la conversation, et n'est guère reçu aujourd'hui que dans le style marotique. La décence l'a banni de la chaire. Les casuistes en faisaient un grand usage, et le distinguaient en plusieurs espèces. On a traduit par le mot de fornication les infidélités du peuple juif pour des dieux étrangers, parce que chez les prophètes ces infidélités sont appelées impuretés, souillures. C'est par la même extension qu'on a dit que les Juifs avaient rendu aux faux dieux un hommage adultère.
